.. And the Food Polka Award for the Best Green Design Goes to…

February 29, 2016 by Food Polka

Because this is award season in Hollywood where an actress wearing a designer dress gets major kudos, I decided to take a moment and give a Food Polka Award. The Food Polka Award for the Best Green Design goes to… Kaffir Lime Vase designed by Mother Nature. One sunny morning as I was walking my dog Jack in my neighborโ€™s back alley, this all-natural, organic vessel rolled to my feet. I picked it up and sniffed it. Where did it […]

My “Miserable” Youth was Filled with this Cucumber Dish ๐Ÿฅ’

February 20, 2016 by Food Polka

As I began exploring my Polish food memories, I realized that many Polish dish names carry pretty negative associations. Let’s take โ€œMizeriaโ€, a simple dinner side green cucumber dish, which basically translates to โ€œMiseryโ€. Mizeria consists of two main ingredients. Sour cream and green cucumbers ๐Ÿฅ’๐Ÿฅ’. Thatโ€™s it. The sour cream was sometimes swapped for similar dairy products like kefir, buttermilk, or yogurt if they were available. Some people used heavy cream instead. To boost vitamins and flavor, my mom […]

Holiday Eggnog Martini just like grandma used to make ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿฅš

December 25, 2015 by Food Polka

When I was a little girl, I fell in love with a homemade treat called kogel-mogel. It was made from raw egg yolks and white sugar. Sometimes, I would add a touch of raw cocoa powder or lemon juice. Growing up in communist Poland, where sweets were rationed and often unavailable, this simple treat meant the world to me especially since I could make it at home whenever I craved something sweet. As I got a little older, I discovered […]

Nothing speaks Celebrate Thanksgiving louder than this delicious threesome ๐Ÿฆƒ

November 24, 2015 by Food Polka

This week, we celebrate Thanksgiving. This time I wonโ€™t be cooking. I am going to celebrate. With my good friends. In the restaurant. And I will not eat turkey because I don’t like it. Iโ€™ll enjoy a juicy, bloody prime rib with horseradish. That said, I have been “entertaining” the idea of a Thanksgiving menu in my kitchen for the last month. How? Playing with different pumpkins, squashes, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, cranberries, oranges…So to keep up with the Thanksgiving tradition, […]

Tomatillo, Jalapeno, Lime, Cilantro Make a God Damn Good Handmade Gift Jam

May 30, 2015 by Food Polka

Last March my mother reminded me about my grandma’s 90th birthday in April. She thought I perhaps should send her a special card or a little gift. So, since I am the biggest fan of handmade gifts, I decided to make something special for her. And… since I am into food I instantly thought that maybe I could make a cool preserve that could be put in a jar and shipped to Poland. I don’t think my grandma’s pallet is […]

Everybody Pesto! Pumpkin-Arugula Pesto ๐ŸŽƒ

May 18, 2015 by Food Polka

I’m sure you’ve tried pesto before. That classic Italian sauce made with basil, pine nuts, and Parmesan is delicious, isn’t it? But did you know that you can easily make it at home in about 5 minutes? Well, you can, and so can this version of pesto, which may not be as classic as the Italian prototype but is just as delicious. This new pesto recipe is made with arugula, pumpkin seeds, and Asiago cheese. While the ingredients may differ […]

Pomegrante chocolates for Happy Mother’s Day and any other occasion

May 10, 2015 by Food Polka

Dark chocolate is full of sophisticated flavor. Personally, the darker the better.ย I love dark chocolate with a cocoa content of over 70% combined with fresh fruits. They bring its taste to a completely new level. I particularly love dark chocolate with pomegranate. The unforgettable sensation of juicy, refreshing, sweet, and sour pomegranate seeds bursting in the middle of bittersweet, dense chocolate is my favorite. These two different flavors and textures are a sweet craving revelation. When we add some fresh, […]
