My “Miserable” Youth was Filled with this Cucumber Dish 🥒

February 20, 2016 by Food Polka

As I began exploring my Polish food memories, I realized that many Polish dish names carry pretty negative associations. Let’s take “Mizeria”, a simple dinner side green cucumber dish, which basically translates to “Misery”. Mizeria consists of two main ingredients. Sour cream and green cucumbers 🥒🥒. That’s it. The sour cream was sometimes swapped for similar dairy products like kefir, buttermilk, or yogurt if they were available. Some people used heavy cream instead. To boost vitamins and flavor, my mom […]

Holiday Eggnog Martini just like grandma used to make 🍸🥚

December 25, 2015 by Food Polka

When I was a little girl, I fell in love with a homemade treat called kogel-mogel. It was made from raw egg yolks and white sugar. Sometimes, I would add a touch of raw cocoa powder or lemon juice. Growing up in communist Poland, where sweets were rationed and often unavailable, this simple treat meant the world to me especially since I could make it at home whenever I craved something sweet. As I got a little older, I discovered […]

According to Polish Conventional Wisdom Homemade, Veggie Pickles Cure Hangover

March 26, 2015 by Food Polka

How about some good, old, homemade veggie pickles? Just like our grandmas used to make. You can make them at home, pack them in a nice jar, and give them as a gift. They are perfect alone as a snack, appetizer, or an addition to your sandwich or dinner. Polish people say that they are great for hangovers. I think you should test that. Quick Pickled Veggies Shopping List (makes approximately 3/1-pint jars): Now follow these steps: If you want […]

Big Lebowski is back with this White Russian Jello Shot!

March 14, 2015 by Food Polka

When Spring Break comes to mind, many people envision jello shots. While these may be a staple at college parties, I refuse to create the cliché jello shot that everyone expects. Instead, I decided to blend the traditions of an American dive bar with those of an Italian coffee bar. Taking inspiration from the classic American cocktail made famed by the film “The Big Lebowski”. I simply infused this American classic with gelatine and turned it into that old favorite […]

Black is the new green in this black olive appetizer ⚫️🫒

March 5, 2015 by Food Polka

I’m not a big fanatic of olives, but I always have a jar or a can of this popular delicacy in my kitchen. Why? For several reasons: 1) Almost every person I know likes olives. 2) They are cheap. 3) Don’t go bad fast and store in a can or jar; it always tastes just as good. 4) They do not need a long time to process or cook. 5) They are the perfect accompaniment to other dishes like meat, […]
